OUGD603 / Extended Practice: Alice in Wonderland for MAC other collections.

OUGD603.
EXTENDED PRACTICE.
Alice in Wonderland for MAC cosmetics.

I thought that it would be beneficial to look at other collections designed for MAC to see if there was a pattern between how two separate brands have been combined. I thought it might also be useful to see if the collections work best when there is a focus on one character or a group of characters. Below I have listed the collections that I have found combining MAC and another brand.

1. Mac cosmetics and Wonder woman.
2. Mac cosmetics and Hello Kitty
3. Mac cosmetics and Fafi
4. Mac cosmetics and Archies girls
5. Mac cosmetics and Rihanna
6. Mac cosmetics Venemous Villains
7. Mac cosmetics and the Simpsons
8. Mac cosmetics and The rocky horror picture show

When finding the images of each collection, I began to look at the similarities, the differences, what I believe make them successful, and therefore unsuccessful. I will then take the positives from each set of designs, and attempt to combine these to create my packaging. Below I have analysed the pro's and cons:

1. MAC Cosmetics and Wonder woman.

- Uses intense amount of colour.
- Design is very busy and staple MAC logo is almost missable.
- Table holder for all make up pieces is also very crowded.
- Almost no existence of classic MAC black and white colour scheme.
- Only consistency through the whole range, and in comparison to the regular line is the shape of the boxes.
- If the mac logo was missing it would not appear to look like part of the brand at all.

2. Mac cosmetics and Hello Kitty.
Source

- Uses similar colour palette to the regular brand with a pop of grey and hot pink.
- Design is still quite busy however is more muted to the lesser colour pallet.
- Table holder for all make up pieces is consistent in colour and illustration with packaging however is mostly type based whilst packaging is mostly illustration based.
- Again all packaging shapes, inside and outer are all the same shape as the original line.
- Mac logo is constantly entwined within the design making it easily to recognise the original brand.

3. Mac cosmetics and Fafi.

- Uses completely different colour pallet.
- Design is focused on the use of white as a base colour instead of classic black.
- Uses a different MAC logo instead of the original.
- Both MAC logo and special edition logo are in the same hand written style typeface.
- Only consistency through the whole range, and in comparison to the regular line is the shape of the boxes.
- Without the use of the word MAC, just by looking at the outside packaging without opening the boxes the line would not look like part of the MAC cosmetics brand.

4. Mac cosmetics and Archies girls.

- Uses completely different colour scheme in comparison to original collection.
- Entire collection has a similar minimalist feel seen across entire MAC brand.
- Small illustrations and MAC logo is easy to read and in original typeface.
- Entire focus is on white over black.
-Consistency to original collection in use of original logo, minimalist style and shape of packaging inside and out.
- Packaging does well to look like part of the brand.

5. Mac cosmetics and Rihanna.

- Uses very simple colour pallet - only 3 colours.
- Completely typography based.
- Very simple combination of colour and typefaces.
- Finish has been used as a tool to differentiate from regular mac collection (metallic finish)
- Only consistency through the whole range, and in comparison to the regular line is the shape of the boxes.
- MAC logo again is not in original typeface, but is in the same type as the name of the collaborative.

6. Mac cosmetics Venomous Villains.

- Uses clever selection of 'dark' jewel tones mixed with original MAC cosmetics combination of black and white.
- Two different types of illustrations, one on outside packaging and other on table stand and product cases.
- Table holder for all make up pieces is highly saturated in colour but lesser detailed than the components its housing.
- Original colour scheme is very strong, and from the outside packaging, it is clear that the collection is associated with MAC.
- Consistency is furthered by keeping the same shape packaging as original collection.
- Most aesthetically similar design so far in terms of packaging.

7. Mac cosmetics and the Simpsons.

- Overall collection is very busy, yet due to use of small colour pallet has a somewhat minimalist feel.
- Use of staple Mac logo in its original colour. (white)
- illustrations for the collection are centered mainly around one character.
- Consistency is pushed further through range as all outside packaging is the same shape.
- Successful collection that pushes a very different style, busy but somewhat minimalist and very fun.

8. Mac cosmetics and The rocky horror picture show

- Uses original MAC colour pallet plus red.
- MAC logo is in its original colour (white) and against a black background as in original collection.
- One illustration used across ALL products and packaging.
- Due to lack of variation and very simple design, packaging does not appear overly 'special' edition like.
- However looks very iconic, and minimalistic reflection both MAC and Rocky horror picture show.
- Consistency is pushed further through range as all outside packaging is the same shape.
- Collection would look like part of the brand even without the MAC logo.

CONCLUSION.

When looking at the past collections there were too in particular which I thought were the most successful, Venomous villains and the Rocky horror picture show. I felt that within the Venomous villains collection it was effective how they had used two different types of illustration for inner and outer packaging, whilst the outer packaging was very recognisable in comparison to the original collection, the inner and table stand still allowed for a lot of creativity. Although I felt the Simpsons was very strong I felt that the lack of concept made the collection slightly weaker than others, both Rocky horror and the villains were from very make up dominated films and therefore I felt were more relevant to the brand. I did however like the minimalist use of marge's hair for a pop of colour, even though that did mean she was the star of the show and the collection did not seem to cast the whole of the Simpsons essentially making it Marge's collection. The Rocky horror picture show, although it used much less detail than any other collection, picked on strong image/theme from the film and ran with it, mirroring both the minimalism of MAC cosmetics branding and the key graphic image of the film. However as their are a number of strong characters in Alice and wonderland, Alice, white rabbit, Mad hatter and queen of hearts all with elaborate make up in the Tim Burton film, it would seem a let down If I were to only focus on one image, and so Instead I will try to include as many as possible similar to the venomous villains collection. I will also, due to the crazy use of colour in Alice in wonderland and my decision to do a selection of illustrations based upon the film, keep consistency like the other collections above by controlling the shape of the packaging and keeping this the same as the original collection.
